We're so honored for the chance to sit down with and speak to Kristina Batiste, @whistlingthescenery, for our latest artTown series in collaboration with TV Tacoma, called "Handmade in Tacoma". Kristina guides us through her art experience, process, simplicity and minimalism, the powerful memory of clay, Black Lives Matter protest pottery, how she would envision a piece of art for Tacoma, and much more. It was truly an awesome experience to hear from Kristina, and we hope you enjoy this segment and share it with a friend.

You can also join Kristina, along with the Tacoma Pottery Salon @tacomapotterysalon, this Saturday, May 18th, from 5-7 pm at the Throwing Mud Gallery, @throwingmudgallery in Old Town.

The Tacoma Pottery Salon, formed by Kristina Batiste and Reid Ozaki, where the recipients of the annual AMOCAT Arts Award for Community Outreach by and individual. The Tacoma Pottery Salon has succeeded in its mission to build a community, provide educational opportunities, and preserve the history of pottery. It has created a space where potters of all backgrounds and experiences can come together, exchange ideas, and celebrate the diversity of the craft. Feedback from attendees reflects the positive impact of the salon, with participants appreciating the chance to connect, learn, and expand their pottery horizons. The salon’s success has grown, attracting more participants and guest potters, which presents a new challenge of maintaining its intimate atmosphere while meeting the increasing demand.

Kristina Batiste was awarded funding to support the 2023-2024 season through the Tacoma Arts Commission’s Tacoma Artists Initiative Program.

In 2023, Kristina Batiste received The Current , An Artist Award, from the Tacoma Art Museum, @tacomaartmuseum.

There were 44,763 participants at in-person events supported through our Community Arts Projects funding program in 2023. $138,000 was awarded to 27 organizations and groups to produce 193 programs and events, 95.5% which were free to the public. Community Art Project funding helps to support grassroots efforts to bring festivals, performances, concerts, public art, education, and more to Tacoma. More than anything we are amazed and inspired to support the many organizations, groups, and businesses that put forth their best contributions to Tacoma!

The City of Tacoma Arts and Cultural Vitality Department, in collaboration with the Environmental Services Department @tacomaenviroservices, is delighted to introduce Teruko Nimura as the Artist in Residence with Environmental Services. Teruko Nimura will serve as an in-house creative strategist and embedded artist, focusing on addressing issues within the Solid Waste Division, particularly those concerning public outreach and education. In her role, Teruko will develop tangible projects aimed at raising awareness, enhancing customer experience, and fostering behavioral changes conducive to healthy neighborhoods and a thriving Puget Sound.

Teruko Nimura is a versatile artist whose repertoire includes drawings, sculptures, site-specific installations, pottery, public artworks, and multi-layered community engagement projects. Her creative endeavors invite discovery and introspection through experiential connection, drawing from her Japanese and Filipino cultural heritage. Themes such as collective memory, identity, motherhood, and the climate crisis are central to her work. Teruko's artistic practice revolves around the body and its interaction with the spaces it occupies. She celebrates the imperfections and vulnerabilities of handmade objects, employing repetition, multiples, and labor as expressions of affection. Her multidisciplinary approach is characterized by an emphasis on process and a fascination with the expressive potential of various materials.

Teruko Nimura's artistic residency with Tacoma's Environmental Services department is funded by 1% for Art contributions generated by the department. We extend our gratitude to Teruko for accepting this Artist in Residence position and for her dedication to enriching our communities with her vision and talent.

Who?
CJS is for Community organizers, advocates, non-profit staff and volunteers, community-based-organization staff and volunteers, and small business owners and staff in Tacoma and Pierce County.

What?
CJS highlights the intersections of climate justice with other topics of concern such as racial equity, housing and economic justice, community safety, human rights, and other issues that organizations are working to address. You’ll hear from speakers about this work and there will be an opportunity to network after the kickoff. Light refreshments from a local food vendor will be provided and a $50 stipend will be offered for participants.

When & Where?
The Kickoff will be held May 28th, 4pm-6:30pm at Tacoma Community College (TCC), with networking after. This event will lead to a greater Summit and/or series to support organizations in 2024.

In 2024, attendees will:

• Leave with a better understanding of how climate action is really about creating better health, jobs, safety, mobility, and affordable housing
• Network with other organizations on best practices, common goals, and supportive relationships
• Learn about ways to leverage climate and environmental justice resources to accomplish and enhance key organizational objectives
• Develop awareness of how to build capacity to address these convergent needs
• Be able to provide input into other City and County climate adjacent plans such as Tacoma’s 2035 Strategic Plan and the Comprehensive Plan.
